Typhoon Glenda strengthened and will probably intensify further on Tuesday morning. It is expected to threaten Metro Manila by Wednesday.
The storm was 400 km east of Legazpi City with maximum sustained winds of 120 kilometers per hour (kph) near the center and gustiness of up to 150 kph, PAGASA said in an advisory at 11 p.m. local time.
Typhoon Glenda is forecast to move in a westward direction at 20 kph, with landfall expected over the Albay-Sorsogon area on Tuesday evening.
State weather bureau said Glenda would then move towards southern Luzon after threatening Albay-Sorsogon.
Glenda is expected to be in the vicinity of Metro Manila (National Capital Region) on Wednesday morning and in the afternoon it will exit the Luzon landmass via Zambales province.
On Thursday evening, Glenda is expected to be at 550 km west of Laoag City or outside the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR).
Typhoon Glenda is the country’s first typhoon since the devastating strike by Category 5 Super Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) in November 2013.
Its winds are expected to peak at 90 mph, making it a Category 1 storm on the five-step Saffir-Simpson hurricane scale, in the next three days, the center said.
Officials have declared class suspensions today due to the possible inclement weather brought by Typhoon Glenda.
