A magnitude 5.1 earthquake was reported at around 6:00 p.m. on December 21, 2014 50 kilometers east of Hinatuan, Eastern Samar.

It was the same spot when a 5.5-magnitude quake shook parts of Eastern Visayas early Sunday, at 8:25 am, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the earthquake was tectonic in nature, adding that it was an aftershock of the 5.5-magnitude quake off the coast of Hernani town in Eastern Samar.

Phivolcs has declared several cities and towns where the quake was reportedly felt:

  • Intensity IV – Hernani; Llorente, Eastern Samar
  • Intensity III – Borongan, Eastern Samar
  • Intensity II – Tacloban Leyte
  • Intensity I – Palo, Leyte

No damage is expected and no tsunami warning was issued.

Aftershocks will be expected after the quake struck, Phivolcs added.
