A magnitude 5.1 earthquake jolted Negros Occidental and its neighboring provinces Monday afternoon, January 26, 2015.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) traced the earthquake at 18 kilometers northeast of Sipalay in Negros Occidental. It was recorded at 3:09 p.m.
The quake, which was tectonic in origin and had a depth of 21 km, was felt at Intensity 5 in Hinoba-an and Sipalay, Negros Occidental.
It was felt at Intensity 4 in Iloilo City; Tayasan, Sta. Catalina, Bayawan City, Siaton and Basa, Negros Oriental and Intensity 3 in Tobias Fornier, Antique; and Ayungon, Negros Oriental.
It was felt at Intensity 2 in Dipolog City; Calamba, Misamis Occidental; Dumaguete City; Jordan, Guimaras; and Cebu City.
PHIVOLCS noted that aftershocks are expected from the quake.
