The Saint Louis University, the largest university north of Manila, placed third after registering an overall score of about 87.61%. A private and Catholic research university run by De La Salle Brothers, De La Salle University in Manila, followed with an overall score of 86.55%.

The oldest existing university in Asia and the largest Catholic university in the world in a single campus, University of Santo Tomas in Manila made the 5th rank on the list for 2014-2018, ahead of Mapua University in Manila at 6th rank, Technological University of the Philippines in Manila at 7th rank, Malayan Colleges Laguna at 8th rank, Southern Luzon State University in Lucban, Quezon at 9th rank, and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology in Tibanga, Iligan City at 10th.

University of the Philippines-Diliman, Mapua University-Manila, and Mindanao State University-Iligan Institute of Technology are presently accredited as Center of Excellence (COE) in mechanical engineering by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). Meanwhile, Batangas State University-Alangilan, Saint Louis University, and University of Santo Tomas are CHED’s Center of Development in mechanical engineering.

The ranking is based on the results of mechanical engineer licensure examinations from 2014 to 2018 plus other factors including accreditation status of the program in 2018 and 5-year average faculty-student ratio to find out which schools offering programs in mechanical engineering have the most valuable degree programs within the 5-year period to produce batch of examinees with high mechanical engineer licensure examination passing rates.

The ranking uses the same performance indicators as the Local Pulse School Rankings, however the measured time is 5 years or from 2014 to 2018. Details on the methodology are discussed here. Other possible factors which are possibly secondary variables in determining the best mechanical engineer schools in the Philippine are included in the disclaimer page. Factors such as international linkages, community involvement, employer reputation, research outputs, and research citations per faculty are not part of this study. These variables are assumed to be assessed by accrediting agencies such as PACUCOA, PAASCU, AACCUP, and CHEd, and thus they are integrated in the accreditation of the institutions.

To rank the schools, we took the weighted passing rate average of mechanical engineer licensure examinations from 2014 to 2018 (40%), the total number of examinees in the 5-year period (20%), and top performing examinees within 2014 to 2018 (10%) as the overall board exam performance, and the average faculty-student ratio from 2014-2018 (10%) and accreditation status of the mechanical engineering programs (20%) as other criteria. Note that the weighted passing rate average we used for 2014-2018 mechanical engineer licensure examinations were adjusted to 75% and above (unlike the PRC’s minimum of 80%), and minimum of 50 examinees in a 5-year total (unlike PRC’s 50 minimum examinees per examination period).
