Google appears to be displaying top 20 Philippine universities frequently mentioned on the web when one searches on Google using, for example, “top universities in the Philippines”.
I noticed this few weeks ago. And I think you’re also now seeing it.
How it works is you do a search like “top universities in the philippines”, and on the SERP it gives you a new area where it lists “Frequently Mentioned on the Web” searches. If you click on one of the images it shows you, the search result page changes depending on which one you click.
Paul Kragthorpe suspected that these look to be related to Google Plus places pages, since they all have a map in the SERP associated with them.
TalkAboutCreative mentioned that in August 2012, Google rolled out “Frequently Mentioned on The Web” a function born from Google’s Knowledge Graph algorithm introduced in May 2012. Accordingly, Frequently Mentioned on The Web is collective knowledge grouped by category and sub-category to make it faster to find what you’re looking for on the web. It’s a strip of images across the top (or down the side) of your search results.
