Depart of Education Secretary Armin Luistro issued an order last week including the lowering of passing grade to 60% for “additional guidelines” on the new grading system which will be enforced in public and private schools this coming school year 2015-2016.
Under Department Order No. 8, s. 2015, the passing grade is lowered to 60 percent from the earlier 75 percent in all tests, quizzes and examinations.
Students will expect 60 as the minimum grade needed to pass a specific learning area, which is then transmuted to 75 in the report card. The lowest mark that can appear on the report card is 60 for Quarterly Grades and Final Grades, the Policy Guidelines on Classroom Assessment for the K to 12 Basic Education Program said.
The new grading system will be implemented in public elementary and secondary schools nationwide starting School Year 2015-2016.
“Non-DepEd schools are urged to implement these policy guidelines as well. Non-DepEd schools are permitted to modify these policy guidelines according to their school’s Philosophy, Vision, and Mission with the approval of the appropriate DepEd Regional Office,” Luistro said.
The new policy urges teachers in public and private schools to bid goodbye of KPUP (Knowledge, Performance, Understanding and Product) Grading System and to welcome the latest K to 12 grading system, which has fewer components – Written Work, Performance Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment.
