#WalangPasok: September 21, 2017 declared Muslim holiday

A memorandum issued by National Commission on Muslim Filipinos dated September 15, 2017 said that September 21, 2017 is a Muslim holiday.

Please be informed that 1439 Amon Jadid (Islamic New Year) will fall on September 21, 2017 corresponding to 1st day of Muharram 1439. It is among the recognized Muslim Holidays in the country by virtue of Article 169 of Presidential Decree No. 1083 (code of Muslim Personal Laws of the Philippines) dated February 4, 1977.

In Addition, Article 170 of the said Presidential Decree states:

  1. “Muslim Holidays shall be officially observed in the Provinces of Basilan, Lanao del NOrte, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Sulu, Tawi-Tawi, Zamboanga del Norte, Zamboanga del Sur and in the Cities of Cotabato, Iligan, Marawi, Pagadian, and Zamboanga and in such other Muslim provinces and cities as may hereafter be created and:
  2. Upon proclamation by the President of the Philippines, Muslim Holidays may also be offically observed in other provinces and cities.

Further, Article 172 of the same P.D. 1083 provides that “All Muslim government officials and employees in places other than those enumerated under Article 170 shall also be excused from reporting to office in order that they may be able to observe Muslim Holidays”.
