Western Visayas will be threatened by Bagyong Seniang that could become a typhoon before it makes a landfall in Surigao del Sur by Monday morning.

State weather bureau PAGASA said Sunday, December 28, the Tropical Depression was last spotted 210 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur, and moving at a west northwesterly direction.

“There’s a chance it may turn into a typhoon,” PAGASA weather forecaster Gilbert Aquino told PNA in a phone interview adding that the said the weather disturbance is still far at sea and may still gather strength.

In its latest severe weather bulletin issued at 11 a.m., December 28, PAGASA said the Tropical Depression Seniang has maintained its strength as it continues to move closer towards Northeastern Mindanao.

Bagyong Seniang is expected to make a landfall by Monday morning in the vicinity of Tandag, Surigao del Sur and associated with occasional rains with occasional gusty winds and moderate-heavy rainfall (7-15mm per hour).

Estimated rainfall amount is from 7 – 15 mm per hour (moderate – heavy) within the 300 km diameter of the Tropical Depression, the bureau said.

Residents in low lying and mountainous areas of the provinces with PSWS#1 as well as over Eastern Visayas and the rest of Mindanao especially Caraga Region are alerted against possible flashfloods and landslides.

Fisherfolks and those with small seacrafts are advised not to venture out over the northern and eastern seaboards of Luzon and the eastern seaboard of Visayas and over the northern and eastern seaboards of Mindanao.

A total of 14 areas were placed in public storm signal warning 1 including:

  • Compostella Valley
  • Camiguin Island
  • Misamis Oriental
  • Bukidnon
  • Dinagat Province
  • Southern Leyte
  • Bohol
  • Siquijor

State weather bureau weather forecast for today predicted that CARAGA and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Davao Del Norte, Davao Oriental and Compostela Valley will have rains with gusty winds.

“Bicol Region, Visayas and the rest of Mindanao will experience cloudy skies with light to moderate rainshowers and thunderstorms. Cagayan Valley, Cordillera, Ilocos Region and Central Luzon will have cloudy skies with light rains,” it said.

Meanwhile, Metro Manila and the rest of Luzon will be partly cloudy to at times cloudy with isolated light rains. The rest of the country will have partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rainshowers or thunderstorms.
