
He asked the lawmakers to pass the bill on death penalty. He stated that death penalty is not only a deterrent but also a means of retribution. The seemingly blatant disregard for the value of human life did not sit well with some sectors.
He also chided people for their support to embattled Senator Leila De Lima who has been seen as a standard bearer for some sectors in terms of morality. Again, the skewed perspective did not sit well with some of the attendees who while laughing with the rest seemed uncomfortable. Duterte did not seem to mind making fun of De Lima’s plight and twisting the facts to serve his purpose. The seeming disregard for decency can be seen as an indicator that morality might take a backseat once more.
