Typhoon Kanor Replaced

PAGASA has replaced the name Kanor in the list of cyclone names due to negative impact from the public, citing a sex video scandal linked to “Mang Kanor”.

Typhoon Kanor Replaced

The state weather bureau told ABS-CBN News that they changed it because the name “Kanor” causes “negative thoughts.”

Earlier this year PAGASA has replaced the names of typhoons Santi, Labuyo and Yolanda in the list of cyclone names due to their severe impact.

Tropical cyclones Santi, Labuyo, and Yolanda surpassed the storm name’s retirement criteria of 300 deaths or P1-billion worth of damage in crops and infrastructure, said the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration.

The requirement to retire a cyclone name, except for Kanor, is when a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of the name would be insensitive or confusing.

The revised PAGASA names for the 2014 typhoon season are:

  • Agaton
  • Basyang
  • Caloy
  • Domeng
  • Ester
  • Florita
  • Glenda
  • Henry
  • Inday

  • Ompong
  • Paeng
  • Queenie
  • Ruby
  • Seniang
  • Tomas

PAGASA also has an auxiliary list of names if the number of tropical cyclones exceeds 25 this year:

  • Bagwis
  • Chito
  • Diego
  • Elena
  • Felino
  • Gunding
  • Harriet
