2017 has been a very good year for the Filipino film industry, with the MMFF 2017 box office exceeding its 1 billion target this year, according to the Metro Manila Film Festival committee.
Without mentioning specific figures, the committee shared on its Facebook page: “We are very happy to announce that we have hit our targets and have set new records with the MMFF 2017 grosses.”
On January 8, 2017, the MMFF executive committee announced that they decided to extend the screening of MMFF films in select cinemas beyond January 7, 2018.
In its earlier Facebook post, the organizers said that gross sales of the first and second day has surpassed the figures of the 2015 edition.
“The big achievement is bringing back our kababayans to the theaters. It took quite some time before we saw this kind of enthusiasm once again from the Filipino viewers,” said MMFF Execom Chair Tim Orbos.
Per Interaksyon, as checked with the official website of SM Cinema, the country’s biggest cinema chain, all eight entries of the MMFF — “All of You,” “Ang Larawan,” “Ang Panday,” “Deadma Walking,” “Gandarrapiddo: The Revenger Squad,” “Haunted Forest,” “Meant To Beh,” and “Siargao” — are still being screened in its cineplexes nationwide.
The Metro Manila Film Festival executive committee previously announced it will not release specific figures and rankings to avoid a bandwagon effect among viewers.
