The ranking of the best medical technology schools in the Philippines for the last 5 years has been released, which currently featured only 38 out of 165 colleges and universities offering undergraduate programs in medical technology or medical laboratory science.

University of Santo Tomas ranked first nationwide for medical technology/medical laboratory science with 95.88% overall score based on overall board exam performance (70%), accreditation (20%), and faculty-student ratio (10%). UST is one of the two institution in the entire country accredited as Center of Excellence (COE) in medical technology/medical laboratory science by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED).

A total of 30,093 out of 37,956 examinees passed the medical technologists licensure examination from March 2014 to September 2018. The weighted national passing rate for the same period was 79.28 percent. Out of this number of examinees, UST registered a total of 1,426 licensed medical technologists. Saint Louis University in Baguio City obtained an overall score of 94.44 percent after registering a weighted passing rate of 99.45% with a total of 1,257 examinees. SLU is presently one of the two CHED’s Centers of Development (COD) in medical technology/medical laboratory science. The school was ranked first in the country for medical technology/medical laboratory science for two years in a row (2017 and 2018).

With an overall score of 87.99 percent, San Pedro College-Davao City placed third with a total of 1,423 successful examinees out of 1,479. SPC obtained a weighted passing rate of 95.54 percent.

Silliman University got an overall score of 86.93% and was ranked fourth, with 729 out of its 779 examinees passing the medical technologists board exams. SU is also CHED’s Center of Development in medical technology

Centro Escolar University-Manila earned the fifth place with an overall score of 86.04% from its 1,013 out of 1,173 examinees passing the licensure examinations.

Completing the 10 best Philippine schools with bachelors in medical technology/medical laboratory science programs for 2014-2018 are the Far Eastern University-Manila (85.88%), University of San Agustin (85.38%), Velez College (83.21%), Far Eastern University-Nicanor Reyes Medical Foundation (81.61%), and the Lyceum of the Philippines University-Batangas, Inc (81.46 percent). LPU-Batangas is presently CHED’s Center of Excellence in medical laboratory science/medical technology.

The ranking is based on the results of medical technologist licensure examinations from 2014 to 2018 plus other factors including accreditation status of the program in 2018 and 5-year average faculty-student ratio to find out which schools offering programs in medicine have the most valuable degree programs within the 5-year period to produce batch of examinees with high medical technologist licensure examination passing rates.

The ranking uses the same performance indicators as the Local Pulse School Rankings, however the measured time is 5 years or from 2014 to 2018 with an adjustment of scores in number of examinees within the 5-year aggregate of data. Details on the methodology are discussed here. Other possible factors which are possibly secondary variables in determining the best medical technology schools in the Philippines are included in the disclaimer page. Factors such as international linkages, community involvement, employer reputation, research outputs, and research citations per faculty are not part of this study. These variables are assumed to be assessed by accrediting agencies such as PACUCOA, PAASCU, AACCUP, and CHEd, and thus they are integrated in the accreditation of the institutions.

To rank the schools, we took the weighted passing rate average of medical technologists licensure examinations from 2014 to 2018 (40%), the total number of examinees in the 5-year period (20%), and top performing examinees within 2014 to 2018 (10%) as the overall board exam performance, and the average faculty-student ratio from 2014-2018 (10%) and accreditation status of the medical technology/medical laboratory science programs (20%) as other criteria. Note that the weighted passing rate average we used for 2014-2018 medical technologist licensure examinations were adjusted to 70% and above (unlike the PRC’s 80%), and minimum of 200 examinees.

Here is the full list of best medical technology schools nationwide for 2014-2018 with at least 200 examinees and with at least 70.0% weighted passing rate.
