Malacañang on Monday evening announced the suspension of government work and classes in all levels nationwide on Oct. 17, 2017 Tuesday, due to the second day of a scheduled transport strike.

Communications Secretary Martin Andanar retracted his earlier announcement of having Tuesday classes and government work and said that government work and classes in public and private schools would also be suspended nationwide for the second day of the PISTON-led transport strike.

Presidential Communications Operations Office Sec. Martin Andanar on late Monday night announced the suspension in a message to reporters.

He added that it was President Rodrigo Duterte who made the decision.

In the , Sec. Andanar said Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea has suspended government work and classes in all levels on Tuesday “due to the nationwide transport strike, public health and safety.”

“May transport strike, ulan, bagyo at walang masakyan,” he said.

“Baka magkasakit mga kawani ng gobyerno at mga estudyante kung maulanan at walang masakyan,” he added.

Memorandum Circular No. 29 issued on Oct. 16 said that the suspension of work in private companies and offices is likewise left to the sound discretion of their responsible executive officers, taking into account the safety and convenience of their employees
