Some areas and schools have declared class suspensions for December 4, 2017, Monday due to another scheduled transport strike.
The transport group Pinagkaisang Samahan ng mga Tsuper at Operator Nationwide (PISTON) has set to stage a two-day transport strike from Monday to Tuesday, December 4 to 5, to protest against the rollout of the government’s jeepney modernization program.
Piston’s national president George San Mateo on Tuesday, Nov. 28, said that their upcoming protest is meant to oppose the government’s planned phase out of jeepneys, which would not pass the vehicle inspection test, starting January 1, 2018.
“The jeepney phase out is just one way for [President] Duterte to appeal himself to foreign and local capitalists. It has no other objective than for a few corporations to monopolize [the jeepney industry],” San Mateo said in Filipino.
Last October, the groups also staged a transport strike against the government’s jeepney modernization program, which prompted the government to suspend classes and government work nationwide.
Below is the list of suspended classes as of 5:25 p.m., Friday, December 1:
- – all levels (public and private)
